Coming together in early 2019, Perth’s King Brown have fast developed as an exciting name on the Western Australian rock scene. Their music, thriving on versatile arrangements and songwriting technique, evokes feelings of nostalgia and sonic notes that very much resonates with today’s contemporary Australian ‘rock’ sound.

Today, the band announces the release of their debut EP, Out In The Desert: a six track collection of tunes that best represent the band’s creative dynamic and their potential, well and truly cracked open and on show.

The band’s most recent single, the infectious ‘Way Down’ was released back in April, further establishing King Brown as one to watch. A song about ‘picking up slack and carrying the weight of others’, ‘Way Down’ was a great entry point for listeners when it came to getting a taste of the full Out In The Desert EP.

King Brown created the visuals for ‘Way Down’ out in Wattleup, WA, with the band’s Shaun Kennedy getting behind the camera to capture the quirky narrative of the clip.

“We went out on a limb with this one and decided to do it ourselves, we had a bunch of fun making this one and the end result turned out alright too! The idea of the skeleton sort of perfectly summed up the theme in the song but in a more light-hearted way.”

The Out In The Desert EP is an immersive listen; evoking feelings of nostalgia, warmth and connection to the songwriting. In a similar vein to bands like The Rubens, Kingswood and even more surf-leaning artists like Ocean Alley, there’s a pull towards the heartfelt when it comes to King Brown’s style of storytelling.

Exemplified on tracks like ‘Lucky’‘Moto’ and ‘Matter Of Time’, we can hear rich guitars and rhythms come together with strong vocals courtesy of lead vocalist Brendon Cross. Each musical element is given its time to shine, making for a sharp and balanced final result.

“This EP has a very much versatile sound, ranging from high energy rock with ‘Moto’ to a cool, laid back bop with ‘Oyzo’, but it’s a sound that’s very much our own, and we’ve found it and grown more into it naturally as we have progressed as a band. It’s cataloguing different times in the band, from early days to very new stuff and we can’t wait to play these songs live and hopefully have the audience finally be able to sing along to them too.”

PRAISE FOR KING BROWN

“Plenty to love here. That you're into the Allah-Lahs is one. That searing guitar is another. I've got about 12 more, but that will do for now.” - Triple J, Richard Kingsmill

“This one stands out with a thick and dusty aura. I think that guitar solo is talking to me, nattering some mischievous things in my ear like a rock devil atop my shoulder.”  - Triple J Unearthed, Dave Ruby Howe

“A four-piece blues, rock band from Coolbellup in Perth, King Brown deserves your immediate attention.” - Scenestr

“King Brown combines classic rock with a modern indie sensibility in a way that is sure to intrigue and tantalise fans of both styles.” - Double J
