It’s not unusual to have fun at Bluesfest. Especially when it’s being headlined by the one and only, Grammy-award winning Sir Tom Jones. Jones proved once again why he is and always will be an enduring legend of the music world with his headlining performance at this years’ Byron Bay Bluesfest. Despite singing about the passage of time and coming to terms with growing old, Jones brought an infectious energy and enthusiasm to the stage that belied his age, captivating the audience from start to finish (my dancing mum included).

Throughout the set, which featured a mix of covers spanning decades and genres, Jones charmed the crowd with his trademark wit, humor, and undeniable charisma. Sharing anecdotes and quips between songs, he effortlessly connected with the audience, making them feel like old friends gathered around for a night of music, reminiscing and laughter.

"I’m a Gemini," says Jones as the crowd cheers, "-that means two, and my name is Thomas which means two - that means there’s four of us. I’m still waiting for the other three to come out."

From the moment he stepped on stage, it was clear that Jones was in his element, relishing every moment in the spotlight. His voice, as powerful and resonant as ever, held the crowd spellbound, each note delivered with strength, grace, and a lifetime of experience.

As he sang classics like "It's Not Unusual" and "Delilah," as well as lesser-known gems like "Talking Reality Television Blues," Jones breathed new life into each song, infusing them with his trademark unique vocals and passion. And when he threw surprises in, like joining forces on stage with The Blind Boys of Alabama for "Run On" and "Didn't It Rain," the result was nothing short of magical!

The audience hung on his every word and note, living for each moment of his performance. And while Jones may joke about his age, as evidenced by his quip about attending Willie Nelson's 90th birthday when he’s “only 83!” there's no denying he remains a force to be reckoned with on stage.

In the end, as the final chords of "Kiss" filled the air, along with thousands of dancing bodies, it was clear that Tom Jones had delivered a performance for the ages, reminding us all why he's been a beloved icon for over six decades. And if his performance was any indication, there's plenty more music and magic to come from this timeless artist.
