EP REVIEW: MAKE WAY FOR MAN - RITES

Perth locals, Make Way For Man, have not disappointed with their latest release, Rites. The 6-track EP explores the ups and downs that life brings, and how best to tackle them. Establishing themselves in 2016, they’ve since continued to “[create] heavy music with a positive message,” something that is not always seen in the heavy genre.

Right from the start, you can hear that Rites is something special. Strangers begins with a melodic guitar tune before building up into the first verse, where you can hear the emotion pouring out of the vocalist. I particularly liked the chorus, as you could clearly hear the connectivity between each instrument.

MVP features a stand-out guitar solo and a catchy chorus. I really liked the contrast between the melodic elements and the heavier vocals and instrumentation. This track encourages individuals to be the best version of yourself that you can be, uplifting those listening.

The third track, Ideations, begins with soft keys playing in the background and heavily distorted vocals. Featuring guest vocals from Sean Harmanis of Make Them Suffer, there’s plenty more guttural screams and blast beats for you to enjoy!

Starting off with melodic guitars, Victories soon dives into a head-banging metal beat. This was one of my favourite songs on the EP as I liked how the melodic and hardcore parts blended together.

The next track, Rites, lets the 5-piece flaunt their technical abilities in multiple genres, by incorporating melodic guitar riffs, drum fills, a rap verse, and a cool techno beat.

The final track of their EP is a fresh take on Fireflies, previously performed by Owl City. They completely owned it, transforming it into their own song, while still playing homage to the original artist. It was a nice throwback to those who hadn’t thought about the song in years.

Overall, Make Way For Man provide a unique metal-listening experience, not entirely fitting into the scope of one specific genre. Fans of bands such as Northlane and Polaris will love this new EP!

‘RITES’ OUT SEPTEMBER 18

Ashlee Brown

Music has had a massive impact in Ashlee’s life. She started playing drums at the age of 16 in a school band with her friends, and she continues to play as a hobby. After realising that she preferred the ‘behind-the-scenes’ elements of live sound rather than the performing aspect, she began studying Audio Engineering at Collarts to fulfil her dream of working in the audio industry.

Outside of her studies, she spends her free time going to as many gigs as she can.

She likes listening to metalcore, alternative-rock, and prog metal, and her favourite bands include Aburden, Alpha Wolf, Ebonivory, and Trophy Eyes.
