“I’ve never written a song about sex before” – Mia Wray

“You thought Work For Me was good? Strap yourselves in, Mia’s just getting started” – triple j

Today Melbourne artist-on-the-rise Mia Wray shares anthemic third single ‘Needs’. Once again putting her formidable songwriting talent and stadium-sized vocals into razor-sharp focus, ‘Needs’, along with the vibrant video (directed by GG McG), bursts with giddy, cathartic energy and innuendo.

Produced by Rob Amoruso (The Rubens/G-Flip) and mixed by Kon Kersting (Tones and I/Mallrat), ‘Needs’ sees Mia venture into new and irresistibly fun lyrical territory:

“Needs was written about a year ago. I was just sitting at the piano and this really fun melody came out and the words “honey, take it down” and I just thought how good it would feel to sing a song about getting even in the bedroom. I had never written a song about sex before and so I wanted to make it fun. It’s not always equal in the bedroom and I just wanted to write a song for the people who have been unsatisfied because their partner didn’t care or just didn’t take the time to work out what they like.” – Mia Wray

The release of ‘Needs’ coincides with Mia being nominated for Breakthrough Independent Artist of the Year at the AIR Awards and selling out her first headline East Coast Tour! Mia played a sold-out Brisbane show last Wednesday ahead of The Lansdowne, Sydney tonight (sold out) and the Corner Hotel, Melbourne (sold out) next Thurs 17th June. The run of shows follows an incredibly busy 2021 for Mia, including a sold-out, four-date headline Melbourne residency, touring with The Rubens on select dates of their 0202album tour, supporting The Teskey Brothers at their 2 x sold out Forum shows, performances on the Channel 9 broadcast of both Sounds Better Together & Music From The Home Front, the AFLW Awards, The Sound (ABC TV), The State of Music, Isol-aid & more.

‘Needs’ follows Mia’s two singles, recent hit ‘Never Gonna Be The Same’ and her 2020 breakthrough, ‘Work For Me’. 2021’s ‘Never Gonna Be The Same’ was met to a stunning response, including being added straight to full triple j rotation and triple j unearthed, HIT National Nights, praise from the likes of Rolling Stone, NME and being named as one of triple j Unearthed’s 10 artists to watch in 2021. Mia’s performance of the song on Sounds Better Together concert series also saw the song shoot straight to #5 on the iTunes Charts.

Mia burst onto the local music scene with one of the most exciting single debuts of 2020 with previous single ‘Work For Me’, which was added straight to full triple j rotation, over 10 Spotify editorial playlists (including #4 on New Music Friday and the cover of Women of AU & NZ), Apple Music support including a spin and plug by Elton John on his Beats 1 radio show, an acappella performance of Work For Me on ABC’s The Sound (as well as performances on 2 x tributes) and more.
